Steve Linkous

President & CEO, Harford Mutual Insurance Companies

Steven (Steve) D. Linkous is President and CEO of The Harford Mutual Insurance Companies (HMIC), located in Bel Air, Maryland, and serves on the Company’s Board of Directors. In 2016, HMIC wrote $185 million in direct written premiums (DWP) and maintains both an A.M. Best Financial Strength Rating (FSR) of “A Stable” and Issuer Credit Rating (ICR) of “a Stable” (Excellent). Direct revenues have increased 64% over the past five years and are projected to eclipse $200 million as the company completes its 175th year of operation in 2017. During his 11-year tenure as President and CEO, significant underwriting profitability has been achieved nine of 11 years, total assets have grown by 78% to $484 million, and policyholder surplus has grown by 140% to $214 million. HMIC provides commercial property and casualty products through its 450+ independent agency partners in seven Mid-Atlantic States and the District of Columbia. Steve graduated with honors from the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, with a degree in Information Systems Management and a concentration in Finance. Steve began his career at HMIC in 1985 as a Computer Programmer. During his 32-year tenure, he has received numerous leadership promotions including IT Manager (1987), Assistant Vice President (1993), Vice President (1997) and Senior Vice President (2004). Assuming the role of President and Chief Executive Officer in 2006, Steve is only the tenth President to lead the company since it was formed in 1842.

Steve is the immediate past Chair of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) Board of Directors, serving in this position from September 2016 to September 2017. He serves as Chair of NAMIC’s Governance and Nominating Committees in addition to serving on the Compensation Committee. Steve is the Past Chairman of the NAMIC Political Action Committee (PAC), and has served on NAMIC’s Property & Casualty Conference (PCC) Board, as well as its Audit/Finance/Risk, Membership, CEO Roundtables and Director Education Committees. Steve is also currently serving on the Board of Directors and as a member of the Accounting & Audit Committee for the Maryland Joint Insurance Association (MDJIA) and the District of Columbia Property Insurance Facility (DCPIF). In addition, he is an active member of the Maryland Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (MAMIC) and has served on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (PAMIC) as Director and 2011-12 Chairman.

Steve is very active in the local community serving as Director on the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health Foundation Board; Director on the Harford Community College Foundation Board and Financial Resources Committee; Director on the Harford County Public Library Honorary Board; and a member of the Harford Family House Leadership Circle. Steve also served for more than a decade on the Board and as the Past President of the Board of Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna as well as Rebuilding Together, both in Harford County. Steve remains very dedicated to and engaged with several other key human services and vibrant community agencies such as The United Way of Central Maryland Harford County, Sexual Assault-Spouse Abuse Resource Center (SARC), The Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County, The Arc Northern Chesapeake Region, Helping Up Mission in Baltimore City, Greater Bel Air Committee, Greater Harford Committee, and the Harford County Chamber of Commerce. In 2012, Steve was recognized as an Emerging Leader by the United Way and received the Good Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America Baltimore Area Council in September 2016. In April 2015, Steve and his wife, Sandi, were honored by the Bel Air Rotary Club with the Paul Harris Fellow Award. Steve and Sandi, with their two boys, Joel and Jacob, reside in Jarrettsville, Maryland.
